Healthy hair is a journey for me as it is for millions of women around the world. Our nutrition, daily routines and certain habits all influence our hair health.
What Constitutes Healthy Hair?
The words that pop up in my mind when I think of “good hair” are thick, shiny, rich and soft to the touch.
So what is the science behind beautiful hair? The main vitamins we need for hair growth are vitamin B, D, E, biotin, iron and zinc. Sometimes the reason for our hair loss or thinning is a deficiency. I’ll talk more about this in another post but ensure you’re getting your necessary nutrients before trying topical treatments for hair growth.
Bad Habits That Ruin Our Hair
- Tying your hair in the same place everyday e.g. a bun on the same spot everyday can cause hair thinning in that spot.
- Using shampoo on the length of your hair can make it dry and brittle.
- Drying our hair with a normal towel can cause damage and breakage.
- Rinsing your shampoo and conditioner off with steaming hot water.
- Tying your hair too tight everyday.
- Washing your hair too often or too less.
- Brushing knots with too much force.
Rosemary Oil For Hair Growth
Rosemary oil for hair growth recently had a spike in interest because of the drastic results it produced for some people. It also blew up on TikTok because of everyone swearing by it to fix hair problems of all types.
According to Health Essentials: “Researchers found rosemary oil to be as effective at encouraging hair regrowth as minoxidil, a medication better known as Rogaine®, says Dr. Khetarpal. The 2015 study focused on people with androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness). “The bottom line is, yes, it does seem to work,” says Dr. Khetarpal.”
DHT, a type of testosterone, can lead to hair loss because it shrinks hair follicles. Rosemary oil is known to help block the effects of DHT and thereby promote hair growth and prevent thinning. It also locks in the hair’s moisture and leaves it looking rich and shiny.
How To Use Rosemary Oil For Hair Growth
Method 1
This is my favourite because it’s simple yet effective. Put about 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and a teaspoon of caster oil into a bowl.
Warm it up for about 20-30 seconds and then add 10 drops of 100% rosemary oil to the mixture. If, like me, you also struggle with your hair getting oily only after a day of washing it then you can also add a couple drops of 100% tea tree oil.
Mix it all together and then apply only onto your scalp, not the length of your hair. I part my hair and ensure that my scalp gets all the oil. I also focus on these Ayurvedic pressure points for hair growth. If you can get someone to give you a 10 minute head massage that would be great too!
I hateeee getting my pillow oily so I don’t sleep with the oil in my hair. Instead I apply it about 3-4 hours before my evening shower and then wash it off. You’ll probably need two rounds of shampoo to remove all the oil but it’s definitely worth it!
Bear in mind that it will take a couple months of regular use to see a significant difference.
Method 2
This is a good method if you generally have a dry scalp which doesn’t get as oily. Add about 5 drops of rosemary oil to 2 teaspoons of a carrier oil of your choice. Apply onto your palms and give yourself a vigorous head massage for about 5-10 minutes.
Leave it in for as long as you like but not less than an hour and not more than a day. Leaving the oil in for too long can lead to an increase in scalp issues, like dandruff for example.
Wash it off thoroughly in the shower and dry with a microfibre towel.
Method 3
Perfect choice if you can’t stand that greasy feeling on your head. This is not with rosemary oil for hair growth but the actual rosemary herb.
Rinse 3 rosemary sprigs and put them in a little pot. Add about 1 and a half cups of water or until the water covers the sprigs. Bring it to a boil and then let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove it from the stove and let it cool.
Once cooled strain the mixture and put it in a spray bottle. Start parting your hair and spraying the mixture thoroughly on your scalp. Massage it in and let it sit for a couple hours until you shower.
This is the best option if you’d like to use rosemary for hair growth but you’re out everyday and don’t want the oily look. It’s also a really cute DIY gift for someone who’s just as passionate as good hair as you are!
Important To Remember
Everyone’s body reacts and responds differently to everything we do. The same applies for hair growth; some of us have it in our genes to grow hair fast and thick while others might not. That doesn’t mean that you will never have good hair, I guess it just means we’ll have to work a little harder at it.
Self-care is important regardless of your genetic makeup and so everyone can use rosemary oil for hair growth. (Unless, of course, you’re allergic to any of the ingredients in this post. In that case do not use it.)
Thank you for taking the time to read this post and I wish you luck on your hair care journey. May it always be thick, luscious and stunning!
